AAP well child care schedule and screening
- Metabolic screening at 2-4 days.
- Sleep position counselling until age 6 mos.
- Head circumference: end at 2 years
- Cholesterol Screening
in Children: if deemed at risk, starting age 2 years, and
at each WCC
- Blood pressure: begin at 3 yrs.
- Dental referral at 3 years of age.
- Hearing/Vision: Snellen testing should begin at 3 yrs. If
uncooperative, retest in 6 mos. Do annually until age 10, then at 12, 15, 18
(about every 2-3 years). Same schedule for audiometry, except begin at age 4.
- Hb (at least 2x): 9 mos (9-12 mos), 13 years (at each visit if
menstruating female)
- UA (at least 2x) : 5 y, 16 y. Urine dip for leuks annually for
sexually active males/females.
- Lead: only if deemed at risk: 9 mos, 2 years
- PPD: annually if deemed at risk
- STD screen: if at risk, starting age 11
- Pelvic exam: all sexually active females. Routine pap and pelvic
should be offered as part of preventive health maintenance between the ages of
18-21 years. (Although newer methods for identifying individuals
exposed to specific types of HPV that may predispose to cervical cancer are
being developed, the American Cancer
Society has suggested that the initiation of Pap screening in adolescents be
delayed until 3 years after the onset of sexual activity because the risk of HSIL
is low during this period. ) See
