Tic disorders / Tourette's
Transient tic disorder
- 5% of school age children
- Lasts <1 year
- Usually motor
- No therapy, reassurance
Tourette’s Syndrome
- Motor AND vocal tics for >1 year
- Onset usually < age 7, Males > female
- 50% have ADHD and/or OCD
- Treatment:
- Risperdal - side effects: extrapyramidal sx’s, tardive dyskinesia
- Clonidine - side effects: drowsiness, hypotension
- Exacerbation of tics is NOT a contraindication to starting/continuing
