PICC line: who needs single vs double lumen

SINGLE LUMEN PICC:

• ALL

• TPN

• Brain tumor

• Hemophilia

• Sickle cell disease

• Liver tumors

• Wilms tumor

• Long term antibiotics: - CF, Osteomyelitis, Abscess

DOUBLE LUMEN PICC:

• AML

• Osteosarcoma

• BMT

• Lymphomas

• ICU and CT ICU only if indicated

 Reminder:

-         number of lumens is directly related to increased infection rate

-         most patients are sent home with PICC’s and require daily heparin flush

-         4 Fr double lumen: small lumen clots often

-         3 FR: adequate for most patient’s especially > 2 years old

-         Large lumen PICC catheters should be considered for patient that require frequent blood transfusions
