Hypoparathyroid, Clinical Symptoms

Symptoms are manifestations of Hypocalcemia

• Neonate: jitteriness, tetany
• Older kids: muscle pain and cramps, numbness, tingling, stiffness of hands and feet
• Chvosteks/ Trousseau sign; Carpopedal/laryngospasm
• Convulsions (Hypo PTH often looks like epilepsy)
• Prolonged QT interval on ECG
• Calcifications in the basal ganglia on CT/ xray
• Longstanding hypocalcemia from hypo PTH can cause: rickets, cataracts, alopecia, delayed/ irreg teeth
