Keratitis
- Usually HSV-2
- Incubation period 2 days to 2 weeks
- Diagnosis:
Treatment:
- PO Acyclovir, famciclovir, valacyclovirreduce duration of symptoms and
viral shedding in primary genital herpes
- Topical not effective
- PO acyclovir started within 2 days of onset of symptoms shortens course by
1 day in recurrences; can decrease frequency of recurrences
Pregnant mothers:
- Risk of neonatal infection in infants born to mothers w/active lesions:
- 5% in recurrences
- 50% in primary genital infection
- HSV cx@ 24-48 hrs after birth
- Contraversial re: empiric acyclovir treatment
- Observation needed (infxn up to 4-6 wks post-natally)
